On April 23, 2008, during the third International Polar Year, travel journalist Flip Byrnes will begin an epic 750km journey across Greenland by skis and kite ski.
A great grand daughter of Antarctic explorer Frank Hurley, if successful, Flip will ski and sail into the record book as the first Australian to cross the East-West Kulusk – Ilulissat route and the second Australian woman across Greenland.
Her dog “Basil”, a broomhead on wheels, is coming along as her mascot for the Black Dog Institute for depression. Together, over the course of a year, the duo aims to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute to assist their clinic to treat many more patients than currently possible. Winston Churchill called his depression “the Black Dog”. One in five Australians will suffer depression in their lifetimes.
Flip will be travelling as a member of the Arctic Kites international team. While Flip is raising funds for the Black Dog Institute, other Arctic Kites team members will raise money for Diabetes UK.
